Planning to Pray
Busy. I’ve noticed that when people ask me how I am, that is the word I have been using lately. I’ve also noticed it is the adjective most parents and students have been using as well. In a day and age where we have more modern conveniences than ever before, we are also busier now than ever too, huh? There are the soccer games, choir concerts, band competitions, volleyball games, and every other extracurricular event you could name for your kids. Then there are the work deadlines, extra shifts, late-night calls, texts, and meetings that are just the normal part of working life. Then there is family time, house chores, grocery runs, etc. And to top it all off, time with your church, fellowship meetings, youth meetings, praise team practices, discipleship, Bible studies, and more. After a while, we start to look like our friend Larry here. With our massive to-do lists and full planners, the first thing we cut from our routine is usually the last thing we should remove — our own personal time with the Father. We tend to face the bull head-on while removing the very thing in our lives that enables us to face the bull of busyness with strength and peace. Friends, I want to encourage you: busyness is not necessarily a bad thing. Godly people tend to be busy people, except that it doesn’t faze them, for the Lord of the Sabbath sustains them. Jesus was quite busy when He walked this earth, but even He took time early each morning to spend time with the Father (Mark 1:35, Luke 6:12, and much more). The great reformer Martin Luther famously said these words: “I have so much to do that I shall spend the first three hours in prayer.” We are all busy. I don’t think that’ll ever change on this side of heaven. There will always be things to do, places to go, and things to accomplish. But may our busyness propel us toward further prayer to the Father, and not tempt us to draw away from Him. In our busy planners, let us make time to pray. What a friend we have in Jesus,
all our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit,
O what needless pain we bear,
all because we do not carry
everything to God in prayer! Seminary is certainly not for everyone, but becoming better equipped with the gospel is for all believers. Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary offers free classes online through their For the Church Institute. They can be done individually or even with a small group with classes such as “Interpreting the Bible” or New Testament overviews. If you ever wanted to dig deeper in your faith and be better equipped to disciple others, this might be an excellent resource for you.For the Church Institute One small update as I close this letter. Jen and I will be on vacation the next two weeks, so our youth volunteers will handle Midweek. Next week, the students will have a night of worship together, and the following week, Pastor Dennis will come to teach that students are not just the future of the church, but the church right now. Even though I’ll be away next week, you are all in my prayers. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if I can pray for you or help you in your walk with Jesus. Until then, go in God’s grace and mercy. Service flow for Sunday, October 25th
Sunday’s Guiding Text Exodus 20:1-17; Romans 5:6-14 Preaching out of Ephesians 6:1-9, Pastor Greg will explore how the Gospel of Jesus reconciles us not only to a right relationship with God, but also to one another, regardless of how wide the gulf may be in a relationship (IE, child to parent, slave to master). In light of this, our service will be guided by Law and Gospel. We will read the 10 commandments to 1) see the character and nature of God, 2) hear how we are supposed to relate to Him, 3) remember how we are to treat one another as His covenant people. In view of the Law, we are reminded of our inability to keep it and our need for a Savior. We will confess our need to Christ and rejoice in the fact that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8). Service Flow Call to Worship Scripture reading: I will welcome all, briefly share a few announcements, and then read Exodus 20:1-6. Song: A Mighty Fortress Is Our God Reminder: The recording is in C major, but we will play it in B-flat major. If you have Google Chrome, I suggest using transpose.video to change the key of the YouTube video. The audio may sound funny, but the extension will let you play or sing along in the correct key. If you do not use Chrome, a site such as this pitch changer provides the same function. Because we are moving from C to B-flat, pitch the audio down two semitones. Purpose: The Lord reveals Himself in this way in our text: “I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, bringing the consequences of the fathers’ iniquity on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate me, but showing faithful love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commands.” A Mighty Fortress reveals both His justice toward evil and His protective, steadfast love for us. Musical Direction: We will start at the beginning and sing the song as written. The instrumentation is straightforward, but the verses do include several interesting chords. Please practice carefully. Build verse 3 into a full chorus. Begin verse 4 lightly, then grow at “Let goods and kindred go” and carry that momentum into two strong choruses at the end. Law & Gospel Scripture reading: Steven will read the rest of Exodus 20:7-17 and lead us in a prayer of confession. Sarah will then bring the Good News and the assurance of our salvation in Romans 5:6-11. Song: Oh, But God Purpose: This actually wasn’t originally on the docket, but Pastor Greg specifically requested it, and the text of the song ties in perfectly with our guiding text. We were unable to save ourselves, but God Key: The original key is B, so if you use a transposition tool, it should be two semitones down. Musical direction: The song starts pretty minimally, with light electric guitar and pad throughout the entire song. It really picks up after the first chorus. The Person and Work of Christ Scripture reading: I will read from Romans 5:12-15 as we see Christ not just as our Savior, but as the true and better Adam. Song: Christ the True and Better Purpose: …I will refer to the note above as to why we are singing it. September & October AWANA Update
AWANA is well underway 🍂 We are a month and a half into our AWANA year, and things are going splendidly! The children have adjusted to the AWANA schedule and are doing well with Scripture Memorization, Choir Practice, and they are asking great questions in large group! During our Large Group, we spent most of September learning some foundational elements of faith and answering the questions, What is the Gospel?, What exactly is the Bible?, and Why do we Pray? On September 27, we kicked off our new series: The Attributes of God. Each week we are leaning different attributes (or characteristics) go God! These attributes teach us about God and who He is! So far we have learned that God is creator, Immutable (unchanging), and that He IS love. We are continuing with our series by learning that God is Just. Coming Up October 21 · Memory Challenge: Memorize Colossians 1:15 and recite it at check-in. October 28 · Pajama Night: Wear your PJs to AWANA December 16 · AWANA Christmas Party Resources If your child is in need of a Bible, we have some we are able to give out, but if you are looking for gift ideas as the holidays draw closer, I’d suggest the Explorer Bible. It comes in different covers and materials, but it is my go-to for children.
